As a senior associate with the firm, Scott Self has represented companies and individuals in state and federal courts throughout the state of Texas. In recent years, Scott has represented clients in a variety of matters regarding claims of premises liability, products liability, transportation liability, consumer and DTPA liability, insurance "bad faith" liability, intentional tort, and commercial disputes.

Since becoming licensed in 2001, Scott has vigorously and professionally defended clients in a number of high-exposure cases involving fatalities and/or serious bodily injuries in the context of:

  1. construction site accidents;
  2. trucking and heavy equipment accidents;
  3. amusement park, stadium, motor sports, boating, playground, and other recreational accidents;
  4. shooting and other criminal incidents; and
  5. drilling rig accidents.
Scott is committed to achieving favorable outcomes for his clients in all aspects of his legal practice, from evaluating a case in its incipiency, to crafting thoughtful legal strategies, developing evidence through witnesses and documents, authoring effective pretrial motions, and defending his clients with character and charisma at trial.

Outside his legal practice, Scott is committed to a number of volunteer activities within the legal community, including working with the Dallas Area Young Lawyers' "Lawyers against Domestic Violence" Committee; interacting with Dallas area elementary students as part of the Dallas Bar Association's "Law Day" in the public schools; and serving as a volunteer judge for numerous high school and college mock trial and moot court competitions throughout north Texas. Scott is also involved in the firm's social activities, including participating in FSSV's highly competitive football and softball teams in the Dallas Area Young Lawyers' leagues.

In recognition of his accomplishments in the practice of law and his volunteer work, Scott was recently named by the publishers of Texas Monthly and Texas Lawyer magazines as a "Rising Star" for 2006, an honor conferred on less than 5% of the attorneys under the age of 40 in the state of Texas.

Scott is married to Aryn Stapp Self, a commercial real estate attorney with the prominent Dallas firm of Munsch, Hart, Kopf & Harr, P.C. Scott and Aryn do not yet have any children, but provide a caring home for an over-abundance of pets.

Representative matters:
Reed, et al. v. Longview Baptist Temple, et al. - Scott and FSSV partner Mike Sharp successfully defended at trial a wrongful death lawsuit in which the decedent, while operating a motorcycle, collided with a church bus operated by FSSV's clients. The plaintiff and her counsel alleged that the accident was caused by the negligence of FSSV's clients asked an east Texas jury for millions of dollars in compensation for her husband's death. The jury responded by finding for FSSV's clients.

Dittman, et al v. Omega Contracting, Inc., et al. - Scott defended a wrongful death lawsuit in which two decedents, husband and wife, were killed in an intersection collision adjacent to a construction site being operated by FSSV's client. The plaintiffs alleged that the accident was caused by the negligence of FSSV's clients and demanded $2 million in compensation for their deaths. However, just prior to the hearing on the Motion for Summary Judgment which Scott authored on behalf of FSSV's clients, the plaintiffs agreed to settle the case for $100,000.

De Paz v. Canyon Parke Apartments, et al. - Scott defended a wrongful death lawsuit in which the decedent, an apartment tenant, was shot and killed by an unknown criminal assailant on the grounds of the apartment complex owned and operated by FSSV's clients. Just prior to the hearing on the Motion for Summary Judgment which Scott authored on behalf of FSSV's clients, the plaintiff agreed to settle the case for less than $125,000.

In re Bennington Marine Corporation - Since 2002, Scott has represented Bennington Marine, LLC, a national manufacturer of premium pontoon boats and other recreational watercraft based in Elkhart, Indiana, in a number of lawsuits filed against it across the state of Texas for injuries relating to a product defect that was the subject of a national recall. Not only has Scott defended Bennington in Texas, but he has also served as a national consultant to counsel in other states regarding effective evidentiary and defense strategies for such cases.
